What's the Problem? Part Loading is Automated, But Setup Isn't
Automation has transformed modern manufacturing. Robots and gantry loaders have made the automatic loading and unloading of workpieces commonplace. Yet one of the remaining bottlenecks in high-mix, low-volume production continues to be setup and changeover time.
While many manufacturers have automated the handling of parts, the workholding systems themselves often still require manual intervention. Chucks, fixtures and clamping devices must be exchanged, aligned and verified, creating downtime that limits machine utilization and manufacturing flexibility.
The next step toward truly flexible manufacturing lies not only in automating the handling of parts, but also in automating the exchange of workholding systems themselves.
Introducing AdaptZero®
To address this challenge, SwissChuck has developed AdaptZero®, an innovative zero-point interface that enables the fully automated exchange of clamping devices and precision workpieces with repeatability measured in microns.
At the heart of the system is an innovative feed chuck that combines precise positioning with secure pallet retention. Pneumatic unlocking allows either manual or automated pallet exchange, while a self-locking mechanism with pneumatic re-tensioning generates pull-in forces of up to 25 kN, providing exceptional stability during machining.
Designed for Flexible Manufacturing
AdaptZero® allows pallets equipped with different clamping devices or workpieces to be exchanged automatically, significantly reducing setup times and increasing spindle utilization.
Key features include:
- Positioning accuracy better than 0.002 mm
- Pull-in force up to 25 kN
- Pneumatic unlocking for manual or automated operation
- Active purge air protection against contamination
- Innovative gripper interface for robotic handling
- Up to seven integrated media lines
- Standard and custom pallet configurations
Smart Manufacturing Ready
For manufacturers implementing Industry 4.0 strategies, AdaptZero® can be equipped with RFID technology for intelligent pallet identification. This enables automatic recognition of workpieces and clamping devices, supporting traceability and creating additional opportunities for unattended and lights-out production.
More Than a Zero-Point Clamping System
Traditional zero-point systems simplify fixture changes. AdaptZero® takes the concept a step further by creating a highly precise, automatable interface between the machine spindle and the workholding system itself.
Rapid traverse speeds are combined with positioning accuracies in the range of 0.1 μm.
As a result, manufacturers gain:
- Reduced setup times
- Increased machine utilization
- Greater process flexibility
- Improved productivity
- Enhanced capability for high-mix, low-volume production
As manufacturers continue their journey toward autonomous production, automating the exchange of workholding systems will become just as important as automating the handling of parts.
AdaptZero® represents the next step in that evolution, combining micron-level precision with the flexibility required by modern manufacturing.
