Although SCHIEK is a relatively new name in the North American market, its products are not new to North American manufacturing. For decades, leading European precision-grinding machine builders have sourced grinding arbors and spindle extensions from SCHIEK—many of which are already operating in machines installed throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Founded in 1987 and headquartered in Schorndorf, Germany, SCHIEK Präzisions-Rundschleifen is a third-generation family business specializing in high-precision grinding arbors, spindle extensions, and customer-specific precision components.

The company began as a small grinding operation founded by Hermann Schiek. Over nearly four decades, SCHIEK has steadily expanded its manufacturing capabilities while remaining focused on the craftsmanship, flexibility, and personal service associated with a family-owned business.

Today, the company is led by Raphael Schurr, representing the third generation of the family. Under his direction, SCHIEK continues to build on its traditional expertise in precision cylindrical grinding while investing in new materials and manufacturing technologies.

A Global Presence Through European Grinding-Machine Builders

SCHIEK’s name may be unfamiliar to some North American manufacturers because its grinding arbors have traditionally reached the market through European precision-grinding machine builders.

Many of these builders source their internal-grinding arbors and spindle extensions directly from SCHIEK. When their machines are delivered to customers in North America, SCHIEK tooling is frequently included as part of the original machine configuration.

As a result, SCHIEK products have been operating in North American manufacturing facilities for many years, often without the end user being familiar with the company that produced them.

SCHIEK estimates that approximately 60% of fuel-system components worldwide are ground using its grinding arbors. This presence reflects the company’s long-standing relationships with European grinding-machine manufacturers and its experience in demanding, high-volume internal-grinding applications.

Through Rey Technologies, North American customers can now work more directly with SCHIEK when replacement arbors, new tooling, or application-specific solutions are required.

Advanced Material Grinding Arbors

While carbide remains the preferred material for many grinding applications, SCHIEK also develops grinding arbors from alternative advanced materials.

Its CB and GC grinding-arbor product families are designed to reduce the rotating mass compared with conventional carbide versions. Depending on the design, these arbors can weigh approximately 70% to 80% less than comparable carbide products.

Lower weight can reduce spindle loading, improve high-speed behavior, simplify handling, and potentially extend spindle life. Certain advanced materials also provide favorable thermal characteristics for high-speed grinding applications.

These products give grinding-machine users another option when arbor length, rotational speed, vibration, or spindle loading begins to limit the process. Specific CB and GC applications, and the productivity improvements they can provide, will be explored in a future article.

Internal Coolant Delivery

Coolant delivery is especially important in internal grinding, where the grinding zone can be difficult to reach using external nozzles.

SCHIEK can integrate internal coolant passages into the grinding arbor to deliver coolant closer to the wheel and cutting zone. Depending on the arbor design and spindle interface, multiple coolant configurations are available.

A properly engineered internal-coolant arbor can help:

  • Improve coolant access to the grinding zone
  • Control grinding temperatures
  • Support chip removal
  • Reduce wheel loading
  • Improve process consistency
  • Protect the surface integrity of the workpiece
