Splitting Microns: The Stöckel Approach to Ultra-Precision Grinding

Why Microns Matter

In ultra-precision grinding, success is often measured in microns. Whether producing punches and dies, fuel injection components, cutting tools, medical parts or optical components, manufacturers increasingly demand tighter tolerances, superior surface finishes and uncompromising process stability.

Achieving these requirements consistently is not simply a matter of spindle speed or control technology. The foundation of precision begins with the machine itself.

The Enemy of Precision

Heat, vibration and structural deflection are the primary enemies of high-precision grinding. Even the slightest movement or thermal distortion can negatively affect part geometry and repeatability.

Conventional machine designs often rely on cast iron structures and rolling element guideways, which have inherent limitations when extremely tight tolerances and superior damping characteristics are required.

Starting with the Foundation

Stöckel takes a different approach.

At the heart of the FSX surface and profile grinding machine is a natural granite machine base. Granite provides exceptional thermal stability and vibration damping while maintaining outstanding rigidity.

By creating a stable platform, the machine establishes the conditions necessary for achieving micron-level accuracy.

Hydrostatic Technology Throughout

The pursuit of precision does not stop with the machine base.

All axes of the Stöckel FSX utilize hydrostatic guideways combined with hydrostatic lead screws and hydrostatic bearings. Unlike conventional rolling elements, hydrostatic systems operate without metal-to-metal contact.

Rapid traverse speeds are combined with positioning accuracies in the range of 0.1 μm.

This results in:

  • Exceptional damping characteristics
  • High stiffness
  • Virtually wear-free operation
  • Smooth motion without stick-slip effects
  • Long-term accuracy and repeatability

Precision by Design

True precision is rarely achieved through a single feature. It is the combination of structural stability, damping, guideway technology and axis design that determines the final result.

The Stöckel philosophy recognizes that ultra-precision begins with sound engineering fundamentals. Every component of the machine contributes to maintaining accuracy measured in fractions of a micron.

One of the many defining features of the platform is its B8 swiveling wheel head, which provides automatic rotation from –30° to +210° with ±1.5 arc-second positioning accuracy. This enables multiple OD features – including shoulders, tapers, and diameters – to be ground in a single setup, reducing part handling and improving repeatability.

“The FSX was developed specifically for demanding creep-feed grinding applications.

Its rigid structure and superior damping allow the machine to absorb grinding forces while maintaining exceptional dimensional accuracy. The result is improved process stability, superior surface quality and predictable production performance.”

Conclusion

Splitting microns is not a marketing slogan – it is the result of a carefully engineered system.

“By combining a granite machine structure with fully hydrostatic axis technology, the Stöckel FSX provides manufacturers with the rigidity, damping and positioning accuracy required for today’s most demanding surface and profile grinding applications.

Because when tolerances are measured in microns, every detail matters!”
