The Challenge: Maintaining Tight Tolerances on XXL Components
As workpieces become longer, wider and heavier, maintaining precision becomes increasingly challenging. Thermal stability, vibration control, machine rigidity and geometric accuracy all become more critical with every additional meter of grinding travel.

Built for XXL Toolmaking
One example is a six-meter Stöckel grinding machine originally built for the production of large stamping, forming and press brake tools. The machine enabled its owner to grind oversized tool components while maintaining the flatness, parallelism, profile accuracy and surface quality required for precision toolmaking.
Applications of this scale require more than simply extending the bed of a conventional grinding machine. As machine dimensions increase, so do the effects of temperature changes, vibration and structural deflection. The complete machine must therefore be engineered as a stable and integrated system.
Natural Granite as the Foundation
A defining feature of the Stöckel FD series is its natural-granite machine structure. Granite provides excellent thermal stability, vibration damping and long-term dimensional accuracy.
Compared with common steel and cast-iron structures, granite expands less as temperatures change and is less sensitive to short-term fluctuations in the surrounding environment. Its strong vibration-damping characteristics also contribute to improved surface quality and more stable grinding conditions.
Stöckel hand-laps the guideways to establish the required machine geometry. Combined with the rigidity of the portal design, this creates a stable foundation for precision grinding across exceptionally long workpieces.
Configured around the Application
The Stöckel FD series is available with grinding areas ranging from 800 × 400 mm to as much as 6,000 × 1,500 mm. Depending on the application, machines can be equipped with V-flat slideways, linear guideways or hydrostatic guideways, as well as different table-drive and dressing technologies.
With the appropriate CNC control and dressing system, the machine can perform surface, contour and profile grinding operations. Additional axes, measuring probes, filtration equipment and automation can also be integrated when required.
